ALASKA now incorporates LwM2M CBOR, a customer-requested feature included in the LwM2M v1.2 specification which helps lower IoT data traffic and charges. Additional updates include enhanced communication security protocols and optimizations to the bootstrap interface

Montpellier, France – 5 July, 2021 – IoTerop, a leading Internet of Things (IoT) device management software company, has today announced that its IOWA Lightweight Machine-to-Machine (LwM2M) Software Development Kit (SDK), which pairs seamlessly with its ALASKA IoT Device Management Platform, now includes three key new features from the LwM2M version 1.2 (v1.2) standard. The enhanced product now includes LwM2M CBOR (Concise Binary Object Representation), updates to use the latest communication security protocols, and optimizations to the bootstrapping interface.

The inclusion of LwM2M CBOR adds an efficient payload encoding format that helps both decrease network traffic and data charges. Moreover, the enhanced version of IOWA takes advantage of the latest communication security protocols based on Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Datagram TLS (DTLS) 1.3. ALASKA users can also now control the use of TLS and DTLS 1.3 through configuration information. Finally, optimizations to the bootstrapping interface in the IOWA software reduce the amount of data and the number of messages transmitted during the bootstrapping exchange. All new versions of IoTerop’s IOWA SDK offer are backwards compatible with earlier versions of the software.

LwM2M is an interoperable industry standard for massive IoT device management. The specialized stack is ideal for the control of resource-constrained IoT devices, but is also capable of managing more powerful and complex IoT devices including routers and gateways. The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), the organization responsible for the LwM2M standard, included LwM2M CBOR and other new encoding formats, enhanced security protocols, and optimizations to the bootstrapping interface in the latest version (v1.2) of the specification.

“IoTerop’s objectives are to continually lower the volume of IoT data traffic and help reduce the overall power consumption of IoT devices, while making it easier to scale the network, because these are the things that are most important to our customers,” says Hatem Oueslati, CEO of IoTerop. “Through board membership of OMA SpecWorks, we have always worked to improve aspects of the LwM2M specifications that meet our objectives and then promptly added them to our IOWA LwM2M SDK and ALASKA IoT Device Management Platform for the benefit of customers.

“IoTerop’s ALASKA platform now supports LwM2M CBOR plus other key upgrades. These key additions bring efficiency enhancements for developers and utility managers alike. We are also in advanced planning to bring even more enhancement features from LwM2M v1.2 to ALASKA later this year,” says Oueslati.

ALASKA is IoTerop’s platform for handling both IoT device management and IoT device data. It is optimized for the most constrained IoT devices communicating on LTE-M, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth networks but can also easily look after advanced IoT products. While ALASKA can operate with any LwM2M implementation, it is optimized for use with IOWA, IoTerop’s lightweight LwM2M software. IOWA offers an implementation of LwM2M versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 within its streamlined solution.
