Paris, France – 9 November, 2022 – IoTerop, a leading IoT device management software provider and Urban Control, an innovative provider of intelligent asset infrastructure solutions for smart cities, won first place in the IoT Business Hub 2022 awards presented by Bearing Point in the category of smart lighting. This year’s IoT Business Hub awards were focused on IoT projects that have demonstrated measurable sustainability efforts.
Urban Control created the Cellular Node IoT luminaire controller, which enables any ordinary streetlight to become a “smart” IoT device. The controller provides several environmental benefits, including the ability to precisely control brightness, react to local weather, pedestrian, and road traffic conditions, monitor energy consumption in real time, and identify and predict maintenance needs.
IoTerop CEO Hatem Oueslati explains more about the project
Urban Control engaged IoTerop to assist with the management of these IoT devices, which resulted in a 20% to 30% reduction of engineering time. Urban Control was therefore able to offer its smart-street-light-enabling devices to the market 3.5 to 5 months faster, allowing cities to control the lighting environment, save energy, and provide a better quality of life for its citizens sooner. For many cities, this can equate to 75% of energy savings, or hundreds of thousands of euros of savings per year. This is significant, as street lighting can be up to 40% of total energy consumption for cities.
Instead of inventing a new smart streetlight to replace existing functional streetlights that simply have no IoT functionality, Urban Control focused on creating a device that would enable existing “dumb” streetlight structures to become “smart” when the device is attached to any streetlighting fixture’s standard socket. This means:
