IoTerop and Urban Control win Bearing Point’s IoT Business Hub award for their combined efforts in IoT smart lighting sustainability

Written by Mackenzie Minch | November 9, 2022

Paris, France – 9 November, 2022 – IoTerop, a leading IoT device management software provider and Urban Control, an innovative provider of intelligent asset infrastructure solutions for smart cities, won first place in the IoT Business Hub 2022 awards presented by Bearing Point in the category of smart lighting. This year’s IoT Business Hub awards were focused on IoT projects that have demonstrated measurable sustainability efforts.

The Project

Urban Control created the Cellular Node IoT luminaire controller, which enables any ordinary streetlight to become a “smart” IoT device. The controller provides several environmental benefits, including the ability to precisely control brightness, react to local weather, pedestrian, and road traffic conditions, monitor energy consumption in real time, and identify and predict maintenance needs.

Measurable Sustainability

Urban Control engaged IoTerop to assist with the management of these IoT devices, which resulted in a 20% to 30% reduction of engineering time. Urban Control was therefore able to offer its smart-street-light-enabling devices to the market 3.5 to 5 months faster, allowing cities to control the lighting environment, save energy, and provide a better quality of life for its citizens sooner. For many cities, this can equate to 75% of energy savings, or hundreds of thousands of euros of savings per year. This is significant, as street lighting can be up to 40% of total energy consumption for cities.

A Wholistic View of Sustainability

Instead of inventing a new smart streetlight to replace existing functional streetlights that simply have no IoT functionality, Urban Control focused on creating a device that would enable existing “dumb” streetlight structures to become “smart” when the device is attached to any streetlighting fixture’s standard socket. This means:

  • Cities can leverage existing infrastructure
The “plug and play” ability partly enabled by IoTerop’s ALASKA device management platform allows existing streetlight fixtures to be controlled and monitored remotely, meaning that functional streetlights do not need to be trashed until their true end of life. Cities can begin conserving energy immediately after the device is installed.
  • Smart streetlighting is accessible to all cities – not just the large and wealthy
Becoming a smart city is often unrealistic for towns or smaller cities due to resource and geographical constraints. Urban Control’s Node 324 is one of the first products on the market that is aimed at enabling cities of any size to have more control over their lighting usage.
  • Reduces waste and pollution
IoTerop's ALASKA IoT device management platform enables each device to be provisioned, secured, and managed throughout its entire lifecycle, meaning that the controller will not necessarily need to be thrown away if it is not functional or if a security breach is detected. Its overall configuration would simply need to be changed, which can be done remotely.
  • Based on open standards for a long-term investment
LwM2M uses two of the most common smart city IoT standards: uCIFI and TALQ, meaning that Urban Control’s devices leverage global, smart city standards. These standards support interoperability, which is paramount for smart cities since they connect and manage multiple types of IoT devices that need to speak the same language.
